Water Treatment

BETONCHEM Corporation manufactures sodium silicates for use in potable water as well as industrial waters. The soluble sodium silicates serve to inhibit corrosion of various metals — iron, lead, copper, and zinc, among others and so reduce their concentrations in the treated water.

Soluble silicates are used in groundwater systems to sequester iron and manganese, and thereby prevent colored water in distribution systems.  An economical alternative to removal plants, silicates also does away with the need for sludge disposal.  Activated silica, produced from sodium silicate, can be used as a coagulation aid in the coagulation and flocculation process to create a heavier floc that settles faster. This wastewater treatment process contributes to lower turbidities and longer filter runs.

How It Works

BETONCHEM soluble silicates perform in wastewater treatment by chelation of metals in solution and by forming a protective film on metal surfaces that isolates the metal from further corrosive attack. As alkaline chemicals, silicates raise the pH of water and thereby provide the further benefit of decreasing the water’s corrosivity.

Sodium silicate can be converted to activated silica by on-site acidification of diluted product.  The polymeric activated silica serves as a coagulation agent to remove suspended solids in wastewater treatment streams.
